Book Club Meeting-Girls of a Tender Age by Mary-Ann Tirone Smith
Tuesday, July 17, 2007, 7:00 PM at Cosi Café in West Hartford Center
About the book: The recovery of repressed memories of the 1953 murder by a serial killer of an 11-year-old friend and neighbor in a blue-collar enclave in Hartford, Conn., triggered Smith’s absorbing memoir. In recalling her childhood, she is compelled to describe her upbringing in a fractured family whose existence centered on placating her older brother, Tyler, an autistic boy who couldn’t bear sounds of any kind. The narrative is further enriched by the author’s investigations into the life and crimes of the psychopath who preyed on her friend and other little girls, and by her insights about the unequal rights of girls and women before feminism. Larger than the sum of its parts, this book illuminates a social class as it recounts a tangled story of a family and a crime.
Please RSVP to Kristin Allukian by Friday, July 13th.

The MHC Hartford Club invites you to read the book and gather for an informal book club meeting on Tuesday, August 18th from 7 to 8:30 PM (location TBD) to discuss the book. About the book: At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur “genius” grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This magnificent book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created, as Farmer—brilliant, charismatic, charming, both a leader in international health and a doctor who finds time to make house calls in Boston and the mountains of Haiti—blasts through convention to get results.
